Muhoozi, son of President Museveni, has declared that he will not seek election to succeed his father, choosing instead to concentrate on transforming the army.
In light of this, Kabanda has invoked the historical resilience of the National Resistance Army (NRA), emphasizing that the struggle for political representation and influence will continue.
He remarked, “It is said that President Museveni was out of Luweero for some months to seek external support from allies like Muammar Gaddafi.
During that time, the war did not stop. Sam Magara, Salim Saleh, Fred Rwigyema, and others sustained it. We shall sustain this one as well.”
Kabanda's comments underscore a growing discontent within the PLU regarding Muhoozi’s approach and his directive for PLU members to return to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Muhoozi has asserted that “PLU isn’t a political party,” a statement that has resonated uneasily among its members.
“There is a sense of disappointment,” Kabanda expressed, noting that Muhoozi’s direction has left many feeling sidelined. He stressed the need for the PLU to carve out a pathway that aligns with its mission and values, rather than being absorbed into the NRM framework.
As tensions rise within the PLU and questions about its identity and future persist, it remains uncertain how the dynamics between the PLU and the NRM will evolve.
The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the PLU can uphold its objectives amid shifting political landscapes.
Kabanda’s determination to sustain the PLU's mission suggests that the organization may seek to assert its relevance in Uganda’s political discourse, regardless of the challenges posed by prominent figures like Gen. Muhoozi.
