Kampala Geopolitics Conference 2024: Spotlight on Conflict, Oil, and Regional Stability
Over the years, the Kampala Geopolitics Conference has carved out a unique space for candid and in-depth conversations on international issues, blending African and global perspectives. In 2023, discussions focused on climate change, digital transformation, and global health crises, and the 2024 edition promises to expand these conversations with a sharp focus on Africa’s growing role in international geopolitics.
The highly anticipated Kampala Geopolitics Conference (KGC) is set to return for its 7th edition, scheduled for October 23rd to 24th, 2024, at Makerere University’s Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility Auditorium. This year’s theme, “The African Dimensions in International Debates,” underscores the growing importance of Africa’s voice in global discussions on international relations, economic growth, and social change.
Organized by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), in collaboration with Alliance Francaise Kampala, the French Embassy in Uganda, and Makerere University, the KGC has evolved into one of Uganda’s premier intellectual events. It consistently attracts scholars, diplomats, and experts from around the world to engage in robust discussions on topics that are shaping the future of both Africa and the world.
At the heart of the 2024 edition is a focus on three critical areas: armed conflicts, oil's impact on economic growth, and regional stability. These themes reflect the pressing challenges facing Uganda and the East African region today.
According to Mr Nils Wörmer, Director of the Regional Programme Security Dialogue for East Africa at KAS, pressing security issues such as the Sudanese conflict and regional terrorism will take centre stage. These are not just regional challenges but global concerns, making it crucial for Uganda and its neighbours to engage in comprehensive peacebuilding efforts.

The French Embassy’s involvement, as noted by Ambassador Xavier Sticker, will bring essential discussions on human rights and international justice to the forefront.
Makerere University’s Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi highlighted the importance of academic research in shaping these global debates, stating, "The conference provides an opportunity for Africa to contribute meaningfully to the global agenda, reinforcing the need for informed, research-driven discussions."
As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, the 2024 Kampala Geopolitics Conference remains an important forum for engaging with the most pressing issues of our time, focusing on how Africa can influence and participate in international dialogues.
