Kampala Summit charts path to strengthen electoral integrity in Africa

The Electoral Integrity Africa Summit held in Kampala, Uganda, has emerged as a key event in the push to enhance the integrity of elections across the continent.

Co-hosted by a coalition of influential organizations, including the Alliance for Financial Monitoring (ACFIM), the Eastern and Southern Africa Electoral Observers Network, and Democracy Reporting International, the summit marked a significant step in addressing the challenges facing Africa's electoral processes.

"This summit builds on a series of critical dialogues on democracy and electoral integrity," said Henry Muguzi, CEO of ACFIM.

"Previous events, such as the Presumption for Democracy Conference in Lusaka, Zambia, and the Future of Citizen Observation Summit in Accra, Ghana, laid the groundwork by highlighting the importance of citizen involvement and the evolving role of technology in elections."

Over three days, the summit in Kampala focused on bolstering citizen electoral observation and emphasizing the crucial role of observers in safeguarding electoral integrity.

Muguzi noted that as political instability and coups increasingly disrupt democratic processes, citizen observers serve as a vital link between the electorate and electoral institutions, ensuring transparency, accountability, and trust in elections.

A significant area of discussion was the regulation of political finance. Summit participants advocated for stricter regulations to level the playing field and prevent financial discrepancies from undermining electoral fairness.

The impact of technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence, on electoral processes was another focal point.

Discussions centered on ensuring that technology enhances rather than hinders the democratic process, with a focus on leveraging tools like AI to support fair and transparent elections while avoiding potential pitfalls.
