Key leaders from the political, security, and religious sectors in the Karamoja sub-region have thrown their weight behind an ambitious anti-corruption campaign spearheaded by Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, Senior Presidential Advisor and Head of the Teso-Karamoja Governance Monitoring Mechanism.

The commitment to intensify efforts against corruption was made during the launch of a new initiative held yesterday at Goli Army Club in Moroto Municipality.

Lt Gen Elwelu, known for his robust leadership style and strong anti-corruption stance, is leading this drive with the goal of promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance across the region.

Speaking at the launch, he highlighted the need for a united approach, urging all stakeholders to adopt a "watchman" mentality—a proactive stance aimed at preventing wrongdoing rather than reacting to it after the fact.

"My work philosophy aligns with the Kingdom of Heaven and the NRA's revolutionary methods, which prioritise prevention over cure," Lt Gen Elwelu said.

He pledged to diligently oversee government programs in the region, stressing the importance of core values such as transparency, servanthood, teamwork, and accountability.

Peter Lokeris, Minister for Karamoja Affairs, lauded Lt Gen Elwelu’s past accomplishments, notably the Nabilatuk resolution, which was instrumental in restoring order in the region.

Minister Lokeris urged all leaders to rally behind Lt Gen Elwelu's efforts, emphasizing that collective leadership is key to bringing peace and prosperity to Karamoja.

"I urge all leaders to work together to bring peace and prosperity to Karamoja in all aspects,"  Lokeris stated, underscoring the critical need for unity in leadership to effectively manage and transform the sub-region.

The meeting also saw a strong show of support from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), with Maj Gen Don William Nabasa, Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, reporting that the security situation in Karamoja remains relatively stable, thanks to ongoing collaborative efforts.

Maj Martha Asiimwe, Head of Resident District Commissioners, echoed these sentiments, pledging unwavering support for Lt Gen Elwelu's anti-corruption agenda.

"We stand ready to work collaboratively with Lt Gen Elwelu and his team for the betterment of the Karamoja community," she affirmed.

The regional meeting was well-attended by key figures, including Hon. Nambozo Florence Wamala, State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Commissioner of Police Okoshi Simon Peter, Brig Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Deputy Commander, and other district officials, religious leaders, and senior security officers.

As Karamoja continues to grapple with development challenges, the united front presented by its leaders against corruption marks a significant step forward in the region's transformative agenda.
