Bukomansimbi district officials who were arrested over extorting from Parish Development Model (PDM) have returned some of the money.
The officials were arrested last week following complaints from residents who reported the discrepancies to PDM Deputy National Director, Jovrine Kyomukama Kaliisa.
According to the residents, they were receiving only shs715,000 instead of the promised shs1 million.
They officials were found guilty of embezzling funds and have since returned a sum of shs50.8 million.
These funds had been solicited under the pretense of insurance, which was supposed to cover repayment in case beneficiaries defaulted .
The scheme involved the officials demanding shs50,000 as insurance on each of the shs1 million distributed by the government to improve household income.
The officials were ordered to withdraw the misappropriated funds from their accounts and hand them over to Bukomansimbi Police Commander Romeo Oneck in the presence of PDM Deputy National Coordinator, Jovrine Kyomukama Kaliisa.
Despite the recovery , Kyomukama highlighted that a significant amount of money is still unaccounted for.
She emphasized the need for a thorough recovery process, urging the District Police Commander (DPC) and Resident District Commissioner (RDC) to ensure all misappropriated funds are returned.
Bukomansimbi RDC, Steven Nfashengabo, expressed concern over the high levels of corruption among district leaders.
He vowed to take serious actions against all corrupt individuals and assured that the recovered money would be returned to the rightful beneficiaries.
"The returned shs50.8 million is proof that leaders in Bukomansimbi involved in corruption and solicit money for service delivery which tarnishes the image of the NRM government which I will not accept."
The recent crackdown has seen parish chiefs in Bukomansimbi fleeing to avoid arrest and dismissal orders for their involvement in the embezzlement of taxpayer money.
Beneficiaries who received their refunded money expressed gratitude to government for taking steps to recover their funds.
