PLU youth urge Museveni to consider power transition
The youth wing of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has called on President Museveni to seriously consider handing over power to another elected individual in 2026.
In a statement, the PLU Youth noted that a significant number of Ugandans, both young and old, including those for and against the NRM as well as civil society members, have been advocating for a peaceful transition of power to the next leader to ensure stability.
“While in Nebbi on Saturday, President Museveni clearly stated that it is not wise for NRM leaders to impose candidates on the people, but that the people should choose those they prefer to lead them,” the statement reads in part.
The PLU youth expressed that their preferred candidate for the 2026 elections is General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, highlighting that despite being unfairly targeted over the years, he has demonstrated tolerance, humility, and dedication to Uganda.
The statement further outlined that Muhoozi could have easily leveraged his father’s influence to rise in political ranks or chosen a business path, given his access to startup capital.
However, he chose to endure rigorous military training and engage in combat operations across Uganda, from the jungles of Galamba and Ssemuliki to Northern Uganda and Teso, demonstrating his commitment to his country.
"He has been a target of many forces over the years and they have unfairly maligned him. We have carefully observed his tolerance, humility and his dedication to fighting for Uganda," the statement further reads.
The youth emphasized that Muhoozi’s role in transforming the UPDF into an elite force and inspiring young graduates to join the military is well recognised.
"We do not, therefore, support him for President because of just being merely the son of the President, we support him as a man of record and performance," the statement read.
They believe Muhoozi is the right candidate to tackle impunity and corruption in Uganda, and to unite various political actors and parties, dismantling the intrigue driven by greed.
The statement appealed to President Museveni to consider retiring Gen Muhoozi from the active military service to allow him to freely engage with Ugandans for political consultations.
While advocating for change, the PLU Youth also acknowledged and praised President Museveni’s leadership, citing his role in transforming Uganda from a failed state to a functional state, shifting the economy from being raw material-based to a manufacturing economy with surplus for export.
The statement also commended Museveni for building a national, pro-people army that has laid the foundation for Uganda's growing economy, now reaching middle-income status.
The youth also expressed gratitude to God for giving Museveni a long life and acknowledged the benefits of political longevity and sustainable development.
