Dr. Kizza Besigye, former presidential candidate of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has sharply criticized the Ugandan government’s decision to charge 36 FDC members with terrorism.

The charges follow their recent detention and secretive return from Kenya, an action Besigye condemns as a misuse of judicial authority.

In a scathing twitter post this morning, Besigye accused the "shameless, rogue NRM/M7 Junta" of fabricating charges against the FDC members, alleging that the claim of "terrorism training" in Kenya is baseless.

He questioned why authorities did not let the supposed training take place if they were indeed monitoring the group to gather evidence.

Besigye also highlighted concerns over the lack of independent state institutions in Uganda.

He argued that an impartial Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) would never have sanctioned such charges. He described the move as a deliberate tactic to prevent the accused from securing bail, thereby keeping them in detention as a form of psychological and physical torment.

The former presidential candidate drew parallels between his own legal troubles and the current case, noting that he has faced multiple charges—including terrorism, treason, and rape—that he claims were unfounded and used as political tools.

Besigye asserted that the current situation could have been avoided if Kenyan institutions had not allegedly been influenced by the Ugandan regime.

“This charge is merely an extension of the physical torture they’ve already endured,” Besigye declared. His comments reflect ongoing criticism of the Ugandan government’s handling of political dissent and the alleged abuse of judicial processes.
