A section of legislators has revealed that majority of the legislators have shunned the request from the office of the Government Chief whip to apply for the the vacant positions of leadership for the over 10 sectoral committees.
According to legislators that this website spoke to, those that have refused to apply fear being branded as being corrupt, in addition to the lack of enough time to campaign for the upcoming 2026 general election as committee leadership requires concertation.
After the Central Executive Committee of the ruling party NRM receiving a report on the majority of the sectoral committee leadership, a number of them were dropped especially those that had served more than two terms creating a vacuum of leadership in more than 10 sectoral committees.
The absence of sectoral committee leadership has affected the operations of Parliament according to some legislators led by Eddie Kwizera and Michael Timuzigu.
This website has learnt that a number of MPs have lost interest and decided to shun applying for the vacant committee leadership positions arguing they fear being branded corrupt.
“It’s true some of our colleagues that had shown interest in the chairmanship of sectoral committees have lost interest and some have refused to apply because of fearing to lose their integrity," said the Bukimbiri County MP Kwizera .
“Others say committing themselves in these key committee positions may not guarantee them enough time to campaign to retain their seats in 2026,"Kajara County MP Michael Timuzigu added.
These MPs are now asking the Central Executive Committee of Parliament to re-consider the re-appointment of the dropped chairpersons of the sectoral committee for the continuity of the Parliament activities.
Some of the committees that lack full leadership include the Legal and Parliamentary affairs, Agriculture committee, Education and Sports, Natural Resources, ICT committee, Trade, Tourism and Industry committee.
The others are the Presidential affairs committee, the East African affairs committee, Health Committee and Local Government and Public Service Committee.
The sectoral committees that have full leadership include the Defense and Internal affairs, Finance and economic Planning, Physical infrastructure, Foreign affairs, Gender, Labour and Social Development Committee.
