Bussi Island to receive long-awaited ferry 'soon'

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is soon handing over a ferry to the people of Bussi Island, Works and Transport minister Katumba Wamala has said.

The ferry will be sailing from Entebbe to Bussi, located in Wakiso District.

Mr Katumba said Bussi os one of the targeted islands that required a ferry to ease transport system and boost both social welfare and economic empowerment.

“Nakiwogo already has a ferry, next is Bussi Island, Namyingo, Lalogi, Amuru, Lake Kyoga, Triple B on L. Victoria, Teso, among others," he said.

"The government is committed to re-establishing more ferries across the country to boost reliable transport infrastructure."

Recently, commuters from Entebbe had resorted to using wooden boats that are too old to cross Lake Victoria to Bussi Island due to a non-operational ferry that broke down years ago.

Residents have been counting losses due to the market that was cut off by the uncertainty in the means of transport from Bussi to the mainland.

The head of enforcement at UNRA, John Bosco Ssejemba, confirmed the minister’s statements, saying they are handing over the ferry in "a very short time".

"They should start celebrating,” Ssejemba added.

The news excited the islanders whose lives have been complicated under poor sustainability means including less government interventions.

Abraham Kaija, a resident of Bussi Island, commended the government for the steps taken to reconnect to the mainland citing new opportunities to the Island.

“Most of us deal in agricultural produce, it’s been a challenge to us not accessing markets especially in Entebbe and other places. we are so excited to hear that the ferry is coming back," Kaija said.

"These markets are where we get the school fees from and other necessities, I am extremely happy.”
