Uganda, UAE sign major infrastructure projects agreements

President Museveni presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Uganda and the United Arab Emirates’ Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry at at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Thursday.

President Museveni welcomed the signing, noting the strengthened relations between Uganda and Gulf countries, a development he said was previously non-existent.

He said the vast potential for investment between Uganda and these nations, which should be thoroughly explored to boost the tourism sector.

The MoU was signed by representatives from the Government of Uganda, including the Ministry of Works and Transport, Civil Aviation Authority, Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, and Uganda Wildlife Authority, along with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Key highlights of the agreement include the construction of Kidepo International Airport near Kidepo National Park and the development of tourist hotels within the park. These initiatives are aimed at significantly boosting Uganda’s tourism sector and overall economy.

Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, assured President Museveni that "construction of the airport would commence in August 2024", with a commitment to timely and high-quality delivery.

The ceremony was attended by notable officials including Internal affairs minister Kahinda Otafiire, Works and Transport minister Katumba Wamala, Martin Mugarra Bahinduka of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, and Abdalla Hassan Alshamsi, ambassador of the UAE to Uganda.

The collaboration marks a promising chapter in Uganda’s efforts to attract international investments and improve its tourism infrastructure, thereby fostering economic growth and development.
