A severe storm struck Nkoma Secondary and Mbale High schools in Mbale City, causing significant damage to infrastructure.

The two schools are part of the four Universal Secondary Education institutions in the city.

The Wednesday afternoon rainstorm unroofed two blocks at Nkoma SS, including a nine-classroom storeyed building and the computer lab.

Over 90 computers in the lab were soaked with water.

The roof from the storied building was blown off and landed on the computer lab at the neighboring Mbale High School, destroying its roof and causing water damage to 65 computers, as reported by Mbale High School's head teacher, Stephen Wambalo.

The affected storeyed structure at Nkoma Secondary School, worth billions, had been condemned due to poor workmanship, having developed cracks shortly after its completion by build base contractors, awarded by the ministry of education.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as students are currently on holiday.

Mr Wambalo noted that the incident could have led to severe disaster if students had been present.

"We don't know what we are going to do necause schools are opening next week," Wambalo lamented, adding that reports have been forwarded to the line ministry for necessary support.

The disaster highlights the urgent need for quality assurance in school infrastructure projects to ensure the safety and durability of educational facilities.

As the schools assess the damage and plan for repairs, the community and relevant authorities will need to collaborate to restore the affected infrastructure and prevent future occurrences.

The damage to both Nkoma Secondary School and Mbale High School underscores the critical importance of adhering to construction standards and conducting regular inspections to ensure the safety and longevity of school buildings.
