UBOS explains importance of census night

Statistics body, UBOS has said that information provided by members of the public regarding the census night will be during the forthcoming national census.

Government gazetted May, 9, 2024 as the census night for the forthcoming national population census.

Updating the country about the exercise, Didacus Okoth, the Senior public relations officer for UBOS said they are in advanced stages to start exercise of counting person to ensure a successful exercise starting May, 10 and running for 10 days.

“The census night will be on  May, 9 2024, which is the reference date for the entire census enumeration period. The next day of May, 10 will be a public holiday and this was done to enable people be at their respective homes to enable the smooth start of the exercise. All questions to be asked will be referenced on the census night,” Okoth said.

He explained that information including people who slept at the specific homes on the census night will be required from the public.

“Even if enumerator came on 10th day, you are supposed to remember whoever slept in your home on the night of May, 9. Everyone should be well conversant with this information and in case the household head is not around during the day for the actual counting, they should leave someone behind well conversant with this information,” Okoth said.

The UBOS senior public relations officer however asked members of the public to be aware of fraudsters who might target them during the census.

He said the enumeration exercise will only be carried out during the day.

“No one should come to your home at night saying they are UBOS staff carrying out census. Those will be criminals. UBOS staff will have clear identity cards with their names.”
