The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has called upon Busoga leaders to foster unity for social and economic development as a mean of eradicating poverty that has lingered in the sub-region.

She said this during the capacity building training of Busoga lower local government leaders in Kampala.

Local government leaders from 155 sub-counties of Busoga attended the capacity building training of lower local government leaders at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

In an engagement with the attendees, Among urged Busoga leaders to desist from divisive sentiments and foster unity for social and economic development as a gateway to prosperity.

"What is paramount is unity, once we are united as Basoga then we can achieve all that we want to achieve in the region.

And (as parliament) we will make sure that whatever resolution we get from you (lower local government leaders) , the NRM's vice chairperson for Eastern region (Capt. Mike Mukula) will deliver it to the president," Among said.

However, some of the participating leaders at the lower local government in Busoga sub-region raised concerns over the reluctance by government to eradicate grotesque poverty in the region that has lingered for decades.

These say even the reliable economic activities like sugarcane growing and fishing have not yielded much because of unfavourable price fluctuation and law enforcement respectively.

Mariam Naigaga, Namutumba Woman MP, said the ruling government didn't performance well in the 2021 elections because of less prioritization of Busoga issues like the lacking infrastructure, unreliable economic activities and ineffective poverty eradication initiatives.

"The issue that led to the president's funny performance in Busoga in the previous elections was the up-bottom approach to issues of Busoga. We now need to change the narrative to bottom-up approach starting with the lower local government leaders," she reiterated.
