President Museveni received a delegation from the African Union (AU) on Tuesday evening, the Presidency said.

The delegation is tasked with evaluating Uganda’s bid to host the African Union Humanitarian Agency.

Uganda’s bid, submitted under the auspices of the AU, is currently under review by the visiting team.

Competing against Kenya, Equatorial Guinea, and Nigeria, Uganda aims to secure the hosting rights for the AU Humanitarian Agency.

The delegation, led by Prof Julio Rakotonirina, head of health humanitarian affairs and social development at the African Union, engaged in discussions with President Museveni about the potential establishment of the Agency in Uganda.

President Museveni emphasized Uganda’s track record in humanitarian efforts, particularly in hosting 1.6 million African refugees, a significant number on the continent after Ethiopia.

The decision to establish a Humanitarian Agency was ratified at the 11th AU Humanitarian Symposium in Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2023, as part of the African Union’s commitment to bolster its Humanitarian Architecture.

The meeting also saw the presence of Vice President Jessica Alupo, Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, and other government officials.
