The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has order for the immediate removal of Pioneer Easy Bus Limited vehicles from the premises of Namboole Stadium.
During her recent inspection visit to the stadium, Speaker Among reiterated that the land surrounding Namboole Stadium should be exclusively dedicated to sporting activities.
“If we have a beautiful stadium, we do not want scrap in it,” Among said, highlighting the need for restoring the stadium’s glory.
Pioneer Easy Bus, a privately-owned public transport venture, rented parts of the parking at Namboole over a decade ago.
Over the years, the bus operator has turned the parking lot into a make-shift junk yard for dozens of their failed fleet of Chinese-made buses.
However, the refurbishment of Namboole Stadium to meet international standards has gained currency, with the presence of the buses at Namboole turning into an inconvenience.
Expressing concern over the utilisation of the stadium's land, Among called for thorough investigations into the leasing agreement with Pioneer Buses and demanded clarity on the revenue generated for the government.
“The land that belongs to the stadium should never be used for anything else without resolution,” the Speaker added.
The ongoing renovation and upgrade of Namboole Stadium, which commenced in August 2022, is on track to meet its completion deadline of May 25th, 2024, as assured by Project Engineer Peter Seku.
With a budget allocation of Shs97 billion, significant progress has been made, prompting Parliament to direct Finance Minister Amos Lugolobi to release the remaining funds.
