Fisherman drowns in Lake Kyoga

A 42-year-old man on Monday evening drowned in Lake Kyoga, local leaders and police have confirmed.

Sam Omongole, a resident of Aguli Cell, Akwanget Ward, Kagwara Town Council, was out fishing at the Akwanget landing site when the unfortunate incident happened.
According to Bernard Odikor, the LC3 chairperson of Kagwara Town Council, Omongole ventured into the annex murky waters of Akwanget landing site to fish on Monday.
However, he was ensnared by strong winds that struck his boat, leading to his drowning.
" Omongole's absence from home since Monday morning prompted his family members to report his disappearance to the LC1 office.
A search operation, spearheaded by residents and fellow fishermen, commenced immediately, culminating in the discovery of Omongole's lifeless body along the shores of Lake Kyoga on Tuesday morning,"Odikor said.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by fishermen, particularly in the face of adverse weather conditions. Odikor emphasized that the absence of life-saving vests and the use of dilapidated boats exacerbate the risks associated with fishing in Lake Kyoga.
Omongole leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife, who has been grappling with mental health issues for the past two years, and their five children. One of his daughters is currently pursuing her studies at Halcyon High School, Serere Campus.
John Jimmy Ameu, the OC Kagwara Police Marine, issued a stern warning to fishermen against engaging in illegal fishing practices and using substandard boats.
"I emphasize the importance of adhering to safety regulations to prevent further tragedies on the lake."
As the community mourns the loss of Sam Omongole, the Kagwara Police Marine unit has handed over his body to relatives for burial arrangements, marking the end of a promising life cut short by a tragic accident on Lake Kyoga.
