Former NEMA Executive Director Dr. Tom Okurut, dies

Dr. Tom Okurut, the former Executive Director of the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), has tragically passed away yesterday afternoon. Dr. Okurut breathed his last at Platinum Hospital in Kampala following a brief illness

According to a close family member, Dr. Okurut succumbed to complications arising from a blood clot that was progressing towards his brain. He was admitted to Platinum Hospital for urgent surgery on Friday after experiencing severe headaches.

"He complained of severe headache and when he was taken to the hospital. They said he had a clot and they had surgery on Friday. Unfortunately, the situation worsened today and he has passed away," the relative disclosed.

Dr. Okurut retired from his position as the head of NEMA in July 2021. He had been appointed to lead the authority in 2011, with his tenure subsequently renewed in 2016.

The passing of Dr. Okurut has left a void in Uganda's environmental sector, as he was widely respected for his dedication and leadership during his time at NEMA.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course as the nation mourns the loss of a distinguished environmentalist and public servant.
