ACCIDENT | At least two people have been killed on the Mbarara-Bushenyi Road after the vehicle they were travelling in veered off lane and got hit by an on-coming UPDF truck.

Ms Annet Kanyuzi, who has been a bursar at Vine High School Rwentuuha in Bushenyi District, and a one Benson Akanjuna died on the spot in the Tuesday afternoon accident.

Two other people, Geoffrey Mwanika - who was in the UPDF truck - and John Twinomugisha, in the  Wish, sustained serious injuries.

The two have been taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

The accident occurred at NARO [National Agricultural Research Organisation] junction near Stabex Petrol Station.

The Rwizi Region Police spokesperson, Samson Kasasira, said the accident involved a Toyota Wish car registration number UBK 493T and a Defence and Military forces truck H4DF 1162.

In an incident report filed on Tuesday, Mr Kasasira said the driver of the Toyota Wish was heading to Bushenyi from Mbarara when he attempted to dodge a pothole at Mile Four, only to come face-to-face with an oncoming UPDF truck.

Damage on the Toyota Wish suggests that the driver, who operated a passenger service, was forced into a desperate attempt to avoid a head-on collision.

The Wish was still hit by the UPDF truck, spinning to face the direction whence it was coming from while the army green truck lost control and overturned.

The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Mbarara Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
