The Minister of Works and Transport, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, has announced that plans for the construction of standard gauge railways will soon commence.

The Minister made this announcement during an Iftar dinner hosted by Yuasa Investment Limited, where several dignitaries were present. The event took place at the Sheraton Hotel.

Gen Katumba Wamala revealed that the government is currently in discussions with a reliable Turkish company for the construction of the standard gauge railways.

"We have recognized the demand for standard gauge railways, and we have partnered with a reputable Turkish company to fulfil this need," he stated.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in modernizing the transportation system and ensuring more efficient and reliable rail services for the nation.

The Minister also addressed the urgent issue of potholes on city roads and emphasized the government's ambitious plans to enhance road safety measures.

"We have a comprehensive plan in place, and by July, we expect to witness substantial road construction activities in the city to address the potholes," he emphasized.

Highlighting the importance of prompt action, Gen Katumba Wamala reiterated, "Taking action promptly is crucial to reducing stress for commuters and minimizing vehicle damage."

He expressed his gratitude to the Turkish contractors for their commendable work in the country.

"I would like to take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to the Turkish contractors who have been making significant contributions. They have executed impressive road projects, and soon we will witness their completion," he stated.

Regarding road safety, the Minister acknowledged the pressing issue of road crashes and emphasized the collective responsibility required to address it.

"I understand that many people have been demanding the construction of standard gauge railways, and it is important to note that road safety is not a one-man job," he noted.

Katumba Wamala appealed to the public to prioritize road safety and adopt responsible behaviour on the roads. He emphasized the gravity of the situation by stating, "On average, we lose close to 4,000 lives each year. That is a significant number."

The Minister's call for collective responsibility underscores the crucial role every citizen plays in ensuring safer roads for all.

Hasham Wahaib, CEO of Yuasa Investment Limited, emphasized the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and called upon individuals and businesses to support their communities.

Wahaib highlighted the need for unity and care for the less fortunate, stating, "Ramadan teaches us to take care of the needy, to interconnect, and to watch out for one another."

He stressed the significance of this blessed month and the values it instils, adding, "No one should be left unattended, and no one should go hungry." He emphasized the responsibility to extend a helping hand to those in need.

Wahaib further explained the significance of the last 10 days of Ramadan, particularly the blessed night called Laylatul Qadr, which falls on odd nights.

Wahaib took a moment to reflect on the role of businesses and individuals in uplifting their communities.

"As we operate our businesses or work in corporate settings, we must ask ourselves if we are truly fulfilling our duty towards the less fortunate," he urged.

Recognizing the ongoing charitable efforts, he called for a collective focus on identifying any weaknesses in addressing the community's needs.

Wahaib emphasized the importance of self-reflection and taking action.

"Let us make a sincere effort to reconcile ourselves and ensure that we are playing our role in supporting those in need," he urged.
