Soroti West legislator Jonathan Ebwalu has raised concerns over the absence of funds allocated by the Ministry of Finance in the upcoming Financial Year 2024/2025 for compensation of the people of Teso affected by the Karimojong raids.

Speaking out against what he sees as a glaring oversight, Ebwalu emphasized the importance of respecting the High Court ruling in Soroti, which called for full compensation of those who suffered losses during the tumultuous period.

Over 3,000 war claimants, led by former Kapelebyong MP Julius Ochan and Kasilo County MP Elijah Okupa, took legal action against the government over the loss of property, cattle, and lives in Teso between 1986 to 1994 and the 200 LRA incursion.

Despite the court's ruling in favour of compensation, Ebwalu lamented the government's lack of action, accusing it of discrimination in the compensation process.

He highlighted the absence of financial resources earmarked for this purpose in the next fiscal year, adding to the frustration of the affected individuals.

The issue has stirred renewed debate and pressure on the government to fulfill its obligations and provide redress to the victims of the Karamoja insurgency in the Teso region.
