Mpigi ramps up effort to deliver clean water, sanitation

By Eric Wakabi

Leaders in Mpigi district have sounded the alarm over the  shortage of clean and safe water, coupled with poor sanitation and waste management practices, which pose a significant health threat to residents.

In response to the pressing issue, Mpigi district local government and the Ministry of Water and Environment have joined forces to initiate a transformative project aimed at addressing the water crisis.

As a fast-growing district with a rising population, Mpigi residents find themselves struggling to access clean and safe water amidst sanitation challenges.

Nakirebe trading center, in particular, grapples with inadequate waste disposal methods, exacerbating the threat to existing water sources.

Richard Ssali, Senior Environmental Officer of Mpigi District, underscored the urgency of the situation.

"The marking of this year’s water and environment week by the Ministry of Water and Environment is a blessing for Mpigi district," Ssali stated.

He further emphasized the ongoing construction of a 200,000 cubic meter reservoir as part of the central umbrella of water and sanitation project, aimed at alleviating water stress challenges.

Arnold Asiimwe, Senior Water Engineer at the Ministry of Water and Environment, reaffirmed the commitment to addressing water scarcity, highlighting the significance of the project in Mpigi district.

Additionally, Member of Parliament for Mawokota North constituency, Hillary Kiyaga, shed light on the grim consequences of water scarcity, revealing instances of lives lost while searching for water along busy road networks.

Kiyaga expressed relief at the extension of clean piped water, which promises respite for residents.

Joseph Sekalega, District Water Officer of Mpigi, provided insight into the project's scope, indicating that the first phase aims to provide clean and safe water to over 5000 residents across 12 villages, thereby combating waterborne diseases.

The collaborative efforts between Mpigi district local government and the Ministry of Water and Environment signify a concerted approach to tackling water scarcity and improving sanitation standards, heralding a brighter future for Mpigi residents in their quest for access to essential services.
