Lands Ministry moves to solve customary land issues in Acholi

Persistent concerns from the communities across the Acholi sub region on boundary issues of their customary land, will be resolved soon, according to the Ministry of Lands Housing and Urban Development.

A series of week long consultative meetings are scheduled for February, 26  to March,7,  2024, through which the ministry is expecting to

further sensitize the local community on various land laws, process of registration of customary land and other land related matters.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Lands Housing and Urban Development, Dorcus Okalany, says that other key objectives under the

engagement next week will include enlightening the population about various land tenure systems, physical planning issues, legal and policy framework in the land sector, process of acquiring land, responsibilities of land management institutions and alternative dispute resolutions.

These plethora of land concerns which cross cut the northern and other regions of the country will see technical teams from the Ministry of Lands Housing and Urban Development provide the critical oversights on the subject matters.

The districts of Gulu,  Amuru, Agago, Lamwo, Kitgum Nwoya, Omoro and Pader are to be covered in the week long consultative meeting on securing land under customary tenure in Acholi sub region.

Among the major actors expected to part of the enjoyments will include the political leadership across the region, technical officers in the district land offices, the police, judicial officers, RDCs, CAOs and traditional leaders.

The Uganda Support To Municipal Infrastructure Development Programme USMID, is completing infrastructure projects such as roads and other urban facilities worth billions of shillings in northern Uganda.

Boundary issues on land remain contentious across the country, in particular where infrastructure projects are being rolled out.
