UPDF's Wazalendo sacco supports Busoga community with medical, school items

Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society has donated items valued at shs50 million that included 20 hospital delivery beds, 600 mama kits to Busoga communities.

The sacco also made a pledge of 600 dozens of exercise books.

The items were delivered during the official launch of Tarehe Sita activities in Busoga subregion that took place at Buyende District headquarters.

Tarehe Sita is a day celebrated to commemorate the beginning of  the National Resistance Movement (NRM)/ National Resistance Army (NRA) struggle that culminated to liberation of Uganda from the forces of tyranny on January, 26, 1986.

This year's celebration that marks the 43 Tarehe Sita anniversary shall be held at Bugweri District on February, 6 2024.

The anniversary is preceded by a week long activities that include among others construction, medical camps, cleaning of towns and trading centers.

While officiating at the launch of Tarehe Sita activities at Buyende District, the first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East Africa community Affairs  Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga congratulated the UPDF for fulfilling its constitutional mandate of defending the sovereignty of Uganda and being pro people.

She hailed  Wazalendo sacco  for the support rendered to the people of Busoga through the donation.

She asked the people of Busoga to embrace the UPDF spirit.

The Chief Civil Military Cooperation Brigadier General Emmanuel Rwashande applauded Wazalendo SACCO for the generous support accorded to the UPDF for extension to the community.

" We thank Wazalendo for not only offering financial services to it's members but also having concern for the community. "Your contribution will strengthen our efforts and enhance our efforts to give back to the community, " said Rwashande.

The vice Chairman of the Board of Directors Lt Col Allan Kiatanda who represented the Chairman WSACCO Board of Directors Maj Gen Sam Kavuma asked the people of Busoga to form Saccos and embrace saving and prudent investments if they are to overcome poverty.

He informed the people in attendance that as the UPDF conducts it's army week activities in Busoga Sub Region , Wazalendo Sacco shall be offering free training to Saccos of Busoga in a bid to improve the cooperative industry.

He asked the leaders of the Saccos in the region to embrace the training.

The CEO Wazalendo SACCO Col Joseph Freddy Onata who handed over the donation to the UPDF on behalf of Wazalendo SACCO noted that the donation comes from Wazalendo Corporate Social Responsibility function whose intention is to give back to the community.

" The spirit behind our giving is to appreciate the community where we operate and reside. This donation is an expression our appreciation to the population for the strategic partnership with the UPDF.  Particularly, this donation of delivery beds and maama kits, is based on our understanding that safe motherhood promotes a health population. It's from the same population that UPDF recruits’ members of the UPDF who constitute the bulk of our membership,” said Col Onata.

He noted that the sacco's corporate social responsibility function focuses on critical areas which affect our people including health, education and environmental protection.

Onata called upon the Saccos to have good governance and be transparent to their members if they are to excel.

He pledged continuous support to the industry through free training, bench-marking and sharing of experiences to the young and upcoming SACCOs.
