The business community at Katuna Border post in Katuna town council of Kabale district has accused security officials and Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), customs office of  aiding smuggling of different commodities into the country.

The traders made the remarks while speaking during a tax baraza which was organized by the URA at Katuna One Stop Border Point in Katuna town council that was aiming at educating traders on smuggling, customs processes and procedures.

Led by the chairperson for clearing agents at Katuna, Kyanika and Mirama Hills borders, Samuel Sserwanga Bunkeddeko, Justus Tindimurekura, a tobacco trader at Katuna border and the chairperson of Bus Companies at Katuna border, Bright Arineitwe, the business community said that security personnel and URA customs officials are aiding smuggling by accepting bribes from traders to allow illegal movement of goods into the country.

They also accused Ugandan URA officials of charging high taxes on some goods like tobacco, compared to their counterparts in Rwanda.

However, URA officials denied the claims , saying they have always impounded good from smugglers.

" About $15000 dollars worth of goods were impounded from smugglers from July to December 2023,and the most smuggled goods include mobile phones, cosmetics, beers, and cattle," Gordon Mutungi, officer in charge of the URA customs office at Katuna border post said.

The Kabale Deputy RDC, Ronald Bakak promised to deal with security personnel involved in smuggling.

"We are aware that security personnel at the border are aiding smuggling and if they don't stop the vice ,they will face arrest and prosecution."
