Kabale Regional Referral hospital administration has confirmed the admission of  five new Covid patients.

"Since the last week of December 2023 up to January 2024, we  have registered 8 cases of covid-19. Currently, five patients are still admitted at the hospital. Many people have flu and cough but very few are coming to hospital for tests," said Dr.Anne Namutebi, a physician at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.

She noted that the number of patients with Covid symptoms keeps increasing at the hospital, urging members of the public to protect themselves from contracting the virus since it is still around.

The physician partly attributed the new Covid cases to the big number of people who were not fully vaccinated while others were completely not vaccinated, noting this could explain the new wave.

She urged members of the public  in Kigezi region to revisit the standard operating procedures and to go for the booster doze in order to reduce on the resurgence.

Besigensi Alfred , the Kabale District Health Educator re-echoed the need for completing the vaccination dose by members of the public.

"For the first dose of vaccination, the turn up of people was very positive standing at 80% but when Covid reduced, people turning up for the booster doze was very low ," Besigensi said.

As of November 2023,72% of people worldwide had received at least one dose of  covid-19 vaccine, with 13.6 billion does administered around the world preventing severe illness and hospitalisations for millions of people.

Last year, the World Health Organization Director General declared Covid was no longer a  global health emergency.

However, WHO emphasized that this announcement didn't mean that covid-19 was  no longer a global health threat but rather it was a time for countries to transition from emergency mode to manage covid-19 along side other infectious disease.
