President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated his DRC counterpart Felix Tshisekedi on his re-election for a second term.

Tshisekedi was declared winner of the DRC polls with more than 70% of the vote beating businessman Moise Katumbi, who received 18% of the vote in the second position while Martin Fayulu, received 5% and  Nobel Peace Prize winner Denis Mukwege, a physician renowned for treating women brutalized by sexual violence in eastern Congo, got less than 1%.

The election had more than a 40% turnout with some 18 million people voting.

In his congratulatory message, Museveni said the re-election of Tshisekedi will ensure continued brotherly cooperation between DRC and Uganda.

“H.E Tshisekedi has positively contributed to the efforts of the region by bringing Congo into the East African Community and by allowing us to work with the Congo army in dismantling the ADF in Eastern Congo. We look forward to more brotherly cooperation with the people and the government of Congo,” Museveni said.

Museveni and Tshisekedi enjoy cordial relations which in December 2021 saw DRC allow the Ugandan army, UPDF enter into eastern  Congo in a joint operation with the Congolese army, FARDC to hunt for ADF rebels which had caused menace.

The joint operation named “Shuja” has had several successes where a number of ADF fighters and commanders have either been killed or captured whereas several abductees have been rescued by the Ugandan army.

On the other side, a number of weapons have been captured from ADF fighters as the group has been forced to relocate camps from near the border with Uganda to run deep inside DRC .

The re-election of Tshisekedi will mean that the Ugandan army will continue being in DRC to hunt for ADF.
