Rwanda army boasts of building Sanity in Mozambique

In April 2021, Islamic State jihadists overran the Mozambican town of Palma, killing dozens of people and forcing a standoff between insurgents and hundreds of civilians.

The vicious insurgency that started in 2017 had overwhelmed the increasingly desperate Mozambican government.

Faced with its inefficient army, the country first sought help from South African mercenaries, a Southern African regional defense force and the infamous Russian mercenary Wagner Group, with little success.

The country’s greatest success, however, happened when it turned to Rwanda to defeat the jihadists, the Rwandan Security Forces, leading to the deployment of 1000 Rwandan soldiers to the embattled Cabo Delgado province.

Three years down the road, they now report to have restored sanity in most parts of northern Mozambique.

“We managed to dislodge them in all their stronghold including their training areas, they were forced to escape down south across the Messalo River to Macomia District in another forest”,

Rwandan Army spokesperson Brig. Gen.  Ronald Rwivanga revealed their remit has mainly been Palma, home to a $30 billion gas project run by the French Giant Total Energies, a key port town through which essential materials for developing the plant are shipped.

Rwanda Security Forces and Mozambique Security Forces operate jointly only in Cabo Delgado Province.

RSF's Area of Responsibility includes three districts Palma, Mocimboa da Praia and Ancuabe districts.

In the ghost town of Mocimboa-da Praia, there stands this hospital that was bombed by the jihadists.

The ruin still stands leaving the returnees with no health facility. The Rwandan forces are now providing medical outreach in makeshift structures to fill the medical gap.

“Our team of experienced medical workers with guidance from the local communities offers periodical medical services based on the needs of the population supplementing on the services offered by Mozambican government”, Brig. Gen.  Ronald Rwivanga stressed.

The RSF joint task force commander in Mozambique Maj. Gen. Alex Kagame said:

“We have been able to deploy fight patrol, ambushes and joint patrol together with the Mozambican forces to achieve this success”.

However, the local population in the previously jihadist-feasted districts of Palma and Mocimboa-da Praia in the province of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique are in full praise of the peacekeeping forces of Rwanda.
