A fire has broken out in City House on Luwum Street in Kampala.
City House has long been known as the "home" of Uganda's oldest political organisation the Democratic Party. It also houses several businesses, including famed shoe sellers Bata.
The morning fire is said to have caused extensive damage started at around 8am as businesses opened up for the day. The fire trapped several people on the multi-storied building. They were rescued by Uganda Police fire brigade which rushed to the scene.
The fire is said to have extended to neighbouring buildings as police battled to contain it.
Emergency services including the fire brigade, police and ambulances are on the scene as rescue efforts continue.
The fire at City House, located in the centre of town, has caused traffic snarl up.
City House is one of the oldest buildings in Kampala, the capital of Uganda.
