Suppliers raid Nakumatt warehouse

Goods worth billions of shillings were forcefully taken from a Nakumatt warehouse along Gayaza road by suppliers who had been demanding payment from the struggling supermarket chain.

Some of the suppliers were demanding as much as Shs 400 million.

It is believed that Nakumatt owes Ugandan suppliers over Shs 1 billion.

At exactly 9 am the court bailiffs and suppliers accompanied by police arrived at the Nakumatt warehouse in Kitetika.

Upon arrival, one of the security guards tried to block police but he was overpowered and arrested.

The warehouse had been locked with heavy duty padlocks but were broken by a team of about 30 men.

Later with the warehouse open, suppliers started picking whatever they could lay their hands on. Some took glasses, plastics, mattresses, foot ware, clothes, fridges, and gas cylinder among others.

Others went for Nakumatt's vehicles which were towed away by break-down.

Godfrey Kyenda, a court bailiff, said most of the valuable goods were taken away by Nakumatt bosses.

Nakumatt closed all its outlets in Uganda while in Kenya, there have been reports that it is looking for a financier to redeem its struggling business.
