Former MP Wakayima survives prison over failure to pay Shs12 million

Former Nansana municipality MP Wakayima Musoke on Wednesday narrowly survived committal to civil prison after court bailiffs rounded him up for failure to pay Shs 12 million to his political rival NRM's Robert Kasule Ssebunya.

Last year,Wakayima, who stood on the Democratic Party card was thrown out of parliament after NRM's  Robert Kasule Ssebunya's challenged his victory.

Court later ordered him to pay shs20 million as costs to Ssebunya but he would later pay shs8 million.

On Tuesday, Court of Appeal deputy registrar Esther Nambayo issued an arrest warrant against Wakayima when neither him nor his lawyer appeared in court to explain why he (Wakayima ) had taken long to pay the costs.

However,on Wednesday,Wakayima appeared before Nambayo to follow up on another case prompting baillifs to swing into action.

Despite pleas, bailiffs from Tropical Associates ascended on the former legislator demanding for the money.

He was later arraigned before the deputy registrar and threatened to be imprisoned for six months but he managed to convince her that he would pay the money .

Wakayima later promised to pay the money in three instalments.

He was given an ultimatum of June 3 to have completed the payment.
