Gov’t declares three-day national mourning for Kyirandongo accident victims, offers Shs5m per victim
Government has declared a three-day national mourning for the 22 people that died in an accident involving a Gaaga bus and two other trucks on Friday.
According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the three days of mourning start today (Sunday), May 27.

“During the three-day mourning, all flags on public buildings will fly at half mast,” the statement reads in part.

On the directive of President Museveni, government will also contribute Shs5m per victim to the families that lost their loved ones to assist in burial arrangements.
“Government will also contribute Shs3m per person to those who were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment,” the statement continues.
22 people were confirmed dead and scores injured when a Gaaga bus hit a tractor truck and split into two. The two bus parts then rolled into a beer truck.
There was chaos in July 2013 when government pledged Shs5m to families who lost loved ones in a fuel inferno in Namungoona.
The chaos was stretched to Mulago hospital where the money was being disbursed in cash with several families fighting to claim the dead bodies, while other people faked injuries to claim they were involved in the incident.
