Street beggar with gun charged to court; remanded

A beggar who was recently found with a gun on Kampala streets has been arraigned before court and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

Kintu Mayambala, 43 who arrested by police at Kalungi Plaza on Johnstone street in Kampala was on Wednesday morning charged with being in possession of a firearm without a valid firearm certificate contrary to section 3(1) and 2(a) of the Firearm Act.

In the second offence, the Director of Public Prosecutions accused Mayambala of unlawful possession of government stores including a UPDF uniform, police boots and a UPDF rain coat suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

However, the 43-year-old street beggar who had earlier been wheeled to court in a chair denied the charges before Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha.

The state prosecutors led by Lydia Nakato in response told court that investigations into the matter are complete.

The trial magistrate issued summons for witnesses in the matter to appear on  May, 8 when she adjourned the case.

The accused didn’t have a lawyer  and neither did his relatives appear in court.
