PICTORIAL: Nkumba University holds first ever student art exhibition

It was an outburst of creativity as students at Nkumba University participated in the first ever art exhibition at the institution of higher learning on Friday.

The exhibition drew over 50 students who showcased charcoal work, pencil work and other art pieces as the university organized a platform to enable fellow students and other members of the public have a glance at the products.

“Years back, the university art gallery used to produce good art pieces but with time, this had stopped. We decided to revive the culture of exhibiting the student pieces not for only marking but to also make other people admire what can be produced here,” said Eric Ssentamu from the Nkumba University School of Art and Design.

He said starting this year; they will be exhibiting students work to help promote it.

“These students do their work indoors but with such an exhibition, we help them to have it promoted for other people to see their ability and talent.  This exhibition is open to both students and members of the public,” Sentamu said.

“This year, we did it to be able to inspire other students and members of the public to also do art. This exhibition will help us discover new talents.”

According to Meddie Byakika, the exhibition helps him compare notes with fellow artists at the university in a bid to see where to improve.

“Such exhibitions help us get clients but inspire other people into becoming artists,” said the Bachelors of Graphics and Communication Design student in his second year.

Favour Nanyonjo a student fashion and textile design, the exhibition is an opportunity for her to showcase new designs.

“The exhibition is a platform for me to get contacts from different people who might turn out to be clients who give me orders but also enables me get connections to propel me in future,”Nanyonjo said.
