UN Base to Remain in Entebbe After Museveni Protest Letter

The United Nations Regional Services Centre in Entebbe will not be relocated to Nairobi as earlier planned.

In a letter to President Yoweri Museveni, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has said Uganda will continue to host the UN regional base.

Uganda has for the past days been thrown in panic following a pronouncement by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, that he was relocating the UN regional service Centre from Entebbe to Nairobi.

The move would see over 400 Ugandans lose jobs in addition to losing revenue since the regional base is contributing significantly to the economy of the Entebbe municipality in particular and the country at large.

Guterres had reportedly approved the plan to move their base earlier this month, but it received opposition from the Ugandan government.

On Wednesday, the Ugandan parliament in a sign of solidarity joined the executive in opposition the relocation of the UN Base from Entebbe to Nairobi urging the Kenyan government not to betray the good neighbour.

Uganda is the largest contributor of troops to the UN-supported African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and currently hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa.

President Yoweri Museveni reportedly protested the planned move to shift the UN base to Nairobi in a letter to the UN Secretary General Guterres.
