Bobi Wine asks Tayebwa to apologise publicly for flogging Umeme worker

There was drama over the weekend when the National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine challenged Thomas Tayebwa to publicly apologise for flogging a UMEME employee in 2020 if government is serious about curbing rights abuses.

Kyagulanyi said that although Tayebwa apologised to the said employee, and even compensated him, it is honourable for him to apologise to the whole nation to regain public trust.

Kyagulanyi made these remarks at the burial of the late Henry Masolo Enrico, the father of John Baptist Nambeshe who succumbed to cancer early last week.

Kyagulanyi said: "You (Tayebwa) have to come out and apologise to the nation and after you do that you will be right honourable speaker but as for now you are wrong honourable speaker."

Earlier Tayebwa had appealed to opposition members and local leaders to stop criticising government and guide their electorate on how they can benefit from government initiatives to get themselves out of poverty.

"You should work for your people because they don’t feed on politics… these programmes are for the people; so, educate them so that they can benefit,” Tayebwa said.

Tayebwa, who was elected as the new deputy speaker last month had also heaped praise on Nambeshe, who is the opposition chief whip, saying that despite being opposition, he is a unifying figure, and urged opposition leaders to emulate him.

Kyagulanyi in his speech castigated government of masterminding impunity and violation of human rights which he said that are key issues in the country.

The NUP president also said that government should address the issue of health care in the country, noting that Nambeshe’s father had died in Kenya because of the health care system in Bududa.
