Security Releases Dr.Kalule from Detention

Sheikh Dr.Ismael Kalule who was a few weeks ago rearrested following release on bail has been released from detention by security operatives.

Kalule was on April 11 released on bail by Justice Moses Mukiibi of the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala but security operatives from the Joint Anti -Terrorism Taskforce(JAT) and counter terrorism police both in uniform and plain clothes forcefully grabbed him before bundling him into a nearby van and drove him away to an unknown direction.

Security agents had since remain tightlipped on the re-arrest.

However, on Saturday afternoon, the Muslim cleric was released and to the surprise of his relatives in Kiwatule, they saw him return home.

Speaking shortly after arriving home, Kalule could not divulge more about his arrest but applauded his family and media for not giving up on ensuring he is released.

“I am happy for being released. I applaud whoever did everything including my family and the media   to see me released,”Kalule said.

His lawyer Evans Ochieng however warned security agencies against repeating what happened following the release of Dr.Kalule.

“If someone is innocent, they should not re-arrested by security agencies so as to build confidence in the various structures of the justice system,”Ochieng said.

Uganda Law Society recently said they would support a move by the Chief Justice ordering for the closure of courts as one of the ways to protest against impunity by security agencies for re-arresting suspects released on bail.

“We have asked the Chief Justice to write to government to issue a last warning that in case such a thing happens again, he (Chief Justice) should order for a closure of courts.If he orders that courts should be closed, we shall fully comply with the order,” the Uganda Law Society president Simon Peter Kinobe said recently.

Dr Kalule was arrested in 2014 at his home in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb after being reportedly found in possession of literature on how to manufacture bombs before he was added onto the suspects in the Lugogo 2010 bombs but was later acquitted of the charges by Justice Alphonse Owiny- Dollo.

He was later charged of terrorism and conspiracy to commit terrorism and was early this month released on bail before being re-arrested.
