Jinja: Street sweeper knocked dead by taxi

Police in Jinja have launched a manhunt for the driver of a speeding taxi which knocked two staff of Jinja City Council killing one instantly during the early morning of February 21.

The fatal accident occurred at Nalufenya road adjacent YMCA Jinja branch at 6:30am when a speeding taxi from Ambercourt side heading to Jinja Central business area knocked the road sweepers while on duty.

The deceased has been identified as Edisa Wamala, 70, a resident of Walukuba East in Jinja City.

She was on duty with her colleague Esther Nabirye when the taxi rammed into them.

Nabirye was rushed to Jinja regional referral hospital in a critical condition

Kiira region police spokesperson James Mubi said they have started hunting for the hit and run driver who is still at large. Police cautioned drivers against reckless driving
