Minister Ogwang, engineers make peace

The Minister of State for Economic Monitoring, Peter Ogwang has met with the executive members of Engineers' Association Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) and Engineers Registration Board (ERB) to iron out issues related to shoddy infrastructure works at the districts.

The meeting followed the feud between the engineers and the minister after the body decried tough and continued arrests of their members at district and municipality levels by Ogwang during his visits.

Ogwang had ordered arrest of some of these engineers during monitoring of the government projects in the four sub regions of Sebei, Elgon, Busoga and Bunyoro.

In order to resolve some of their grievances, Ogwang organised a meeting which he said was "fruitful" without divulging many details.

"I had a fruitful meeting with the executive members of engineers' association and other stakeholders. We have harmoniously agreed on a number of resolutions regarding quality service delivery and addressed some of the bottlenecks," he tweeted.

The engineers called on the government and other stakeholders to involve them when carrying out detailed technical assessment or investigation to determine the cause of poor workmanship or alleged inflated cost of projects, or any related corrupt practices before subjecting the officers to embarrassing treatment.
