Feared terror convicts who escaped from maximum security prison caught

Three dangerous terror convicts who had escaped from prison have been re-arrested in eastern Kenya while trying to flee to neighbouring Somalia.

They broke out of the Kamiti maximum security prison in the capital Nairobi on Sunday.

Musharraf Abdalla, Joseph Juma and Mohamed Ali Abikar were re-arrested some 300km (186 miles) from the capital.

Mohamed Ali Abikar was convicted for his role in the 2015 Garissa University attack in which 148 people were killed.

One of the the other fugitives was arrested in 2012 over a foiled attack on the Kenyan parliament and the third for trying to join the al-Shabab militant group in Somalia.

The Daily Nation newspaper tweeted a photo of the three:

The convicts escaped from the heavily guarded facility, which led President Uhuru Kenyatta to sack Kenya's prison boss.

Anti-terror police had launched a massive operation to hunt down the fugitives following a presidential directive that the three convicts must be re-arrested at all costs.

A reward of 60m Kenya shillings ($535,00:£396,000) had been offered to anyone who provided information on the whereabouts of the three.

Several other top ranking prison officers and warders were arrested following the daring escape and some were charged in court on Thursday.

The incident was the first to be reported from the heavily fortified prison in Kenya.
