Couple who shared fake nude photo of president on WhatsApp freed

A Zimbabwean couple has been freed from detention after a magistrate tossed out a case against them for allegedly sharing a photoshopped nude of the country's president on WhatsApp,their lawyers say.

Sarudzayi Ambiri Jani, 39, and Remember Ncube, 35, were imprisoned in June 2020 for allegedly undermining and insulting the president but never put on trial.

The doctored image appeared to show President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the nude, except for a small piece of clothing from his Zanu-PF party and a mask which covered his private parts.

Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba freed the two from remand because the prosecution had failed to try them more than a year after their arrest.
