Vaccinate religious leaders and open places of worship too, DP urges government

The Democratic Party (DP) has urged government to add men of God to priority groups that need to be vaccinated to allow for places of worship to reopen.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, DP Spokesperson Okoler Opio Lo Amanu said that the foundation of this country is seated on the fear of God and the continued closure of churches does not depict that.

"Unfortunately, the government is only focusing on the economy, schools, etc forgetting the spiritual enrichment of the citizenry, for example, the government has never thought of vaccinating the servants of God," Opio said.

Opio said that just like the government recently launched a campaign to have teachers and learners above 18 years vaccinated, servants of God too, need to be added to the list so that the closure of places of worship ends.

"Just like you are vaccinating teachers, let the Imams, Sheikhs, priests and other religious leaders be vaccinated in preparation of opening the Churches and Mosques," Opio added.

The party mouth piece said said that Covid-19 will be here for a long time, and the government should allow citizens learn how to live with it, instead of closing down the the temples of God.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja said last month that men of God should wait for government to assess the Covid-19 situation before they can be allowed to operate.

Nabbanja urged religious leaders to engage in government programs during this time when places of worship are closed.

Places of worship in Uganda have been closed since June 18, 2021.

President Museveni in his July 30 address on Covid-19 said that government will assess the situation around places of worship after 60 days which expire at the end of September, 2021.
