MPs lash out at ministers for dodging House sittings

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anita Among on Thursday prematurely adjourned the parliamentary sitting until August 24, faulting ministers for their continued absence in the House which affects business.

Among's decision followed claims from some legislators that instead of ministers attending Parliament, majority are ever seen loitering in the corridors of Parliament and some in canteens having tea and eats all the time.

The Busia Municipality MP, Geoffrey Macho was the first to raise a matter of procedure on whether it is proper to continue with the sitting when ministers supposed to provide answers to the issues being raised by legislators are not present in the House.

His query was based on the matter of national importance raised by both Bukomansimbi Woman MP, Veronica Nanyondo and Dr. Abed Bwanika of Kimanya- Kabonera of machete welding men who have resumed their attacks in greater Masaka.

There was no minister from the security sector to respond to the issue.

Many MPs faulted the ministers for just loitering in the corridors of Parliament and in the canteens instead of attending to House business.

This angered Among who adjourned the House prematurely.

Many legislators regardless of their political affiliations welcomed the decision of the Deputy Speaker.

However the Chief Whip, Thomas Tayebwa said the absence of majority of the ministers in the House is based on the fact that the ruling party is only allowed 60 MPs per plenary sitting meaning some ministers miss out.

He dismissed claims that majority of the ministers just loiter in the corridors of Parliament and in the Canteen taking tea and food all the time.
