Entebbe deaths: the grief and the bizarre

At least 18 young females have been brutally murdered in Wakiso district over the last two months capping a tumultuous period for security agencies and the country.

As police assures the nation that the situation is under control, JOSEPH SABITI and ISABELLA TUGUME paint for us a grim picture of some of the victims as others stare in the future with a lot of uncertainty.

Entebbe and Nansana, two municipalities in Wakiso district, have been in the news recently for a bad cause; the increasing cases of murder only bent towards one sex, women.

The murders that have become a daily occurrence are sending shock waves across the country with the number of those killed getting to 18 amidst conflicting reports from security agencies over their occurrences.

The deceased’s body was discovered in a deserted area on a path which was a shortcut to and a small distance away from the landing site.

Miles away in Wakiso another woman was found stripped andrnkilled at Nakule zone, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso District. Teddy Nakacwa, rnis believed to have been killed after she left a bar in the wee hours of thernmorning.

It is believed that Nakacwa's assailants could have trailedrnher from the bar or the man she might have left the bar with strangled herrnafter sexually abusing her.

Prior to this unfortunate incident, two bodies were foundrnstripped naked in Nansana West B ward whereas two others were discovered dumpedrnin a garden in Masitoowa.

Of the four bodies, the police managed to identify only onernas that of Juliet Nampijja, a resident of Namungoona in Rubaga division,rnKampala.

Another case, the body of Gorreti Nansubuga, 19, was foundrndumped in a banana garden on June 7, a few metres from her home that she sharedrnwith her friend, Sylvia Kirabo. At the time of her murder, she was two monthsrnpregnant.

Her body was discovered lying on the back with her legsrnspread open and a stick inserted into her private parts.

Less than two weeks later, on Monday, June 19, another nakedrnbody of Faith Komugisha, alias Jamilah, 31, was found dumped in a garden behindrnher house near the former Ssese Gate Way Beach in Kitinda village, Katabi TownrnCouncil.

Her face was bruised. A long stick; was inserted into her privaternparts and caked blood lay between her legs.

The deceased women and girls fall into the categoriesrnof  sex workers while the other four werernmarried women and 1 student.

The manner in which the six women met their death has arnstriking resemblance. The killers take advantage of abandoned bushes andrngardens to hide the bodies of their victims.

 KadagarnSpeaks Out

Meanwhile, rnthe Speaker of Parliament, Alitwala Rebecca Kadaga this week directed thernministry of Internal Affairs to furnish parliament with details of how securityrnis handling the rampant wave of murders in Wakiso district.

Speakingrnto journalists at Parliament Kadaga expressed concerns about the violence metedrnon the women.

“What we really need to do is to appeal torngovernment to ensure the constitutional rights of women to go to work, to leadrntheir lives. The local leaders of those areas should be vigilant about thernsecurity of their areas,” Kadaga said.

A numberrnof MPs that spoke to Nile Post  expressedrnthe same sentiments questioning the way the security apparatus of the countryrnis run .

JuliusrnOchen, the MP for Kapelebyong said security agencies have a lot of questions tornanswer.

“It is arnshame to the government in power, which has over 33 security agencies, drawingrncolossus sums of money under the pretext of maintaining security. This callsrnfor an inquiry on the performance of the agencies,” Ochen said.

BarnabasrnTinkasiimire, the Buyaga West MP said there was insecurity everywhere.

Thernmurder waves first appeared in the greater Masaka an event that locals said itrntook community efforts to combat.

Parliamentrnshall reconvene next week after a long break. It is not clear whether otherrnwomen will have fallen victim by then. But the question is: will discussing thernmatter in the House yield any tangible results or should there be somethingrnmore to that?

This comes barely a week after police recovered two bodiesrnof two women on the same day but in different locations. One was found in Buloba parish and the other in Kawempe.rnAisha Nakasinde a 25-year-old food vendor from Entebbe was found murdered withrna stick inserted in the mouth and another in her private parts.
