Besigye: "Government has lost fight against Covid-19"

Opposition behemoth, Dr. Kizza Besigye has said that the government has lost the fight against the Covid-19 as the country comes to the end of the lockdown that was instituted to help contain the spread of the pandemic.

Speaking to NBS television in an interview on Monday night, Besigye said Covid-19 fight should have been a matter that is nationally embraced with the planning led by technical teams which is not the case.

He said that the fight against the pandemic is not an ordinary political matter that needs to be weighed in and contested over by different political parties.

"We should have had expert teams that advise the country on how to manage this and then we would have had an inclusive conversation that would have been centred in Parliament where the plan would have been discussed with the input from everybody in the country and then continued monitored by everybody," he said.

He explained those who made the fight against the pandemic partisan have lost everything because political parties don’t have expertise to manage this kind of situation.

"This is an area where we should have had the best experts from the public sector, from academia, from the commercial and industrial bodies forming the leading team like you see in other countries and then you have the planning that is all inclusive not a tug of war between the political parties," he said.

Besigye said people should not think that the lockdown is an end in itself, adding that that is why some people have always come up with a number of recommendations right from the beginning of the lockdown on how to better manage the situation.

"We need to isolate those who are most vulnerable to getting severe disease and possibly to die and those are the people who are aged 60 years and above or those people who have chronic ailments that make vulnerable to severe disease of Covid-19 like those of heart disease or those who have high blood pressure diabetes ,cancer. These two categories should be isolated and made a priority for vaccination,"he said.
