Parliament approves Gen Muhoozi as minister

The Appointments Committee of Parliament has vetted and approved the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen David Muhoozi as the new State Minister for Internal Affairs.

On Thursday, Gen Muhoozi faced the committee before he was approved.

Following his appointment as minister, many have since wondered how Gen Muhoozi will served as both the Chief of Defence Forces(CDF) in the UPDF and Minister for Internal Affairs yet the UPDF doesn’t fall under the same ministry but rather in the Ministry of Defence.

However, on Thursday, the new junior Internal Affairs Minister commented about the matter.

“I cannot be a minister and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) at the same time. I will not retire from the army but I am not going to remain CDF. A replacement will be named so that I move on to my new job. The appointing authority will name someone soon,” he said.

Commenting on him as a serving military officer being appointed in a ministerial position, the outgoing Chief of Defence Forces said what matters is the performance.

“The UPDF can serve anywhere. If they assign duties, do you perform them according to the expectations?  That should be the question and not who does what.”

President Museveni recently directed the new State Minister for Internal Affairs to spearhead the implementation of installing digital monitors in all vehicles and motorcycles so as to help in fighting crime.

Gen Muhoozi said the project is ongoing but noted he will pick it from where his predecessor ended.

“It is work in progress. My processor had covered some ground and will pick it from there.  I won’t give you details here but has covered good ground. Soon enough, the procurement process should be sanctioned.”
