Minister: Goma is now safe after volcanic eruption

DR Congo -->

The prime minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo says people can start returning to the eastern city of Goma following last month's volcanic eruption.

Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, who is in Goma with about a dozen other ministers, said there had been a sufficient reduction in seismic activity.

About two-thirds of the city's population of 600,000 fled after the eruption of nearby Mount Nyiragongo.

Many have already drifted back informally.

Mr Lukonde said the military governor would announce a programme of phased returns.

Those who lived in areas destroyed by the volcano have been told to move elsewhere permanently.
