Third Mumbere guard dies in prison

Another guard attached to the Rwenzururu Kingdom was reported dead while on remand in Kirinya government Prison, Jinja District over the weekend.

55-year-old Masereka Makidad succumbed to prostrate cancer as he was being rushed to Jinja Hospital for medical attention.

It is reported Makidad had been suffering from prostrate cancer and the prison authorities were aware.

“They (Prison authorities) told us they would be providing him medical attention as required, but as you know you cannot get the best attention while in prison,” Mr Clarence Mumbahya Bwambale, the Rwenzururu Kingdom spokesperson told Nile Post when contacted.

“His fellow inmates told us he died while being rushed to Jinja Hospital. He was buried at his home in Buhuhera, in Kasese District,” he added.

Makidad’s death follows that of Yosam Bagheni, 65-year-old resident of Kyabalongira village, Kyabalongira Sub county in Kasese District who died at Jinja Hospital in January following a week long sickness.

Before Bagheni’s death, Bosco Mbusa Bwambale, 36, a resident of Lhuhwahwa village, had succumbed to injuries during detention.

A total of 162 guards loyal to Rwenzururu king Charles Wesley Mumbere were arrested and detained at Kirinya prison. Through their lawyers; Caleb Alaka, Samuel Muyizi, Aaron Kizza, the suspects complained of torture by security officers while in detention.

However, then Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi (RIP) denied the torture allegations saying all the suspects who have wounds sustained them during the gun fire exchange between government security forces and the royal guards in November 2016.
