Nixon Agasiirwe's co-accused also charged with torturing Kamwenge Mayor

The Buganda road Chief Magistrate’s court has added Abdulnoor Ssemuju, 59, onto the charge sheet of the people accused of torturing Kamwenge Mayor Godfrey Byamukama last year.

Following the spread of gruesome photos in which Byamukama had sceptic wounds due to torture last year, four police detectives including ASP Patrick Muramira, ASP Fred Tumuhairwe; Habib Roma(driver) and Ben Odeke were charged with torture but were later released on bail.

On Wednesday, hearing of the case was supposed to commence but one of their lawyers Ronald Natweta told court presided over by James Eremye Mawanda that the fifth suspect, Ssemuju also known as Minana was not in court because he was still incarcerated at Makindye military police detention centre.

“We went to Makindye but we were denied access to the facility and could also not be allowed to access him,” the lawyer told court.

The lawyers asked court to assist them and have him produced before the civil court to answer for the charges related to torturing the Kamwenge mayor.

In response, the magistrate said he would issue a production warrant to Makindye military police to have him produced before Buganda road court to attend trial.

The five are accused of arresting Byamukama from the office of William Turyomurugendo , the commissioner planning and quality assurance in the ministry of lands and urban development, dragging him in a police van and beat him using metals and other sharp objects.

Following the murder of the then police spokesperson AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi in March last year, a number of people including Byamukama were arrested on suspicion of having participated in the murder before being detained at Nalufenya detention centre in Jinja district.
