Kampala Central MP, Muhammad Nsereko has condemned the National Unity Platform (NUP) for what he says was their lack of decorum during the funeral of former Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya.
Ssegirinya was buried on Sunday in Butale cell, Masaka, amidst chaos, as two factions- NUP and their rival Mathias Mpuuga organized separate farewell events for him.
The division stemmed from disagreements over whether Ssegirinya should have received an official send-off organised by Parliament.
While Parliament proposed a formal ceremony led by Mpuuga, NUP leaders rejected this, accusing Parliament of politicising the funeral.
The burial was marked by a bitter exchange of words between the factions, which many observers deemed inappropriate.
Despite the turmoil, Ssegirinya was laid to rest, but numerous attendees expressed their disappointment over the disrespectful behavior displayed during the ceremony.
Nsereko, has taken to social media to criticize NUP for "dismissing" the requests from the state and Ssegirinya's family to hold the funeral at a larger venue, Butale Playground.
He also alleged that the NUP group disrespected Muslim burial customs during the farewell for the deceased legislator.
"They should have expressed their views at the party headquarters, not at the funeral. "Let the Muslims at the mosque also offer their eulogies. You entered the mosque without proper ablution, sitting there pretending to converse. What were you discussing? What prayers were you going to offer? You left the mosque and went to his ancestral home. The family should be allowed to honour him in their own way and treat the deceased with respect," Nsereko added.
"How would you feel if your body was being treated this way? The mourners were left in disbelief," he continued.
Ssegirinya passed away last week at Lubaga Hospital after a prolonged illness.
He was remembered fondly by many for his humour and dedicated service to his constituents in Kawempe North.
His funeral was attended by numerous leaders, including NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, who attributed Ssegirinya's health struggles to the treatment he received from the state during his time in prison.
