Nsereko calls for respect of Court discretion in bail matters

Kampala Central MP, Muhammad Nsereko, has called on politicians to respect the independence of the judiciary, particularly in the exercise of discretion in bail matters.

Speaking during a parliamentary session to honor the late Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, Nsereko emphasised the critical role of bail in ensuring justice and protecting individuals' rights.

"Bail is a fundamental aspect of a free and fair trial," Nsereko stated.

"Had Hon. Ssegirinya been granted bail earlier, he might have accessed the medical care he urgently needed, possibly averting the tragic circumstances of his death,"he added.

Ssegirinya, who passed away at the age of 37, had faced health challenges that worsened while in custody.

Despite medical recommendations, his condition deteriorated, raising questions about the fairness of his treatment and the decisions surrounding his bail.

Nsereko also shared personal reflections on Ssegirinya’s reversion to Islam, recalling his public declaration of the Shahada, the testimony of faith in Allah and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

"When I knew you as a young man, you were called Richard. You stepped forward and embraced Islam, declaring your belief in one God, Allah, and His messenger, Prophet Muhammad," Nsereko said.

He praised Ssegirinya for maintaining ties with his roots and honouring those who had raised him, a value highly regarded in Islam.

Reflecting on the inevitability of death, Nsereko cited teachings from the Quran.

"Allah has decreed that life and death are tests for humanity. Unlike laws that can be amended, death is inevitable," he noted.

Nsereko urged for unity and introspection following Ssegirinya’s passing, calling on Ugandans and fellow politicians to honor his legacy and draw lessons from the circumstances surrounding his life and death.
